Young science student honoured
John Paul II High School student Dana Lambert receives her ‘Realise the Dream’ Medal from the Governor-General Sir Jerry Mataparae.
After winning local science fairs on the West Coast with her science project on the strength of a spider’s web, the 15-year-old took things a step further when she was selected by the Royal Society of New Zealand for Realise the Dream, a national event which acknowledges and celebrates New Zealand’s finest examples of science research or technological development undertaken by secondary school students.
Dana, along with a further 19 top science students from around the country, had a week-long trip touring through the North Island visiting science organisations and experiencing some tourist attractions.
Receiving her award at Government House was an “incredibly proud moment”, Dana said. She said her mind was opened to many new ideas and possible opportunities for the future.
As the first West Coast student to be selected for Realise the Dream she hopes that she has led the way for other students from the region to follow suit.
