After a painstaking five-year search, the 40-odd members of the Westland Baptist Church were finally able to celebrate at the weekend, with an official induction of new pastor Alan Brown.
The Baptist Church in Hokitika and South Westland had been without a pastor to lead the flock since the untimely death of Gordon Pearce.
Church leadership committee member Sally Anderson said a four-member pastoral search team had worked for several years to find the right candidate to fill the shoes left by Mr Pearce.
Members of the Salvation Army and Baptist churchgoers from Hokitika, Ross, Darfield and Kaiapoi attended an official induction service for Mr Brown at the Hokitika RSA clubrooms, on Sunday.
Although he has been in the role since July, the first induction planned for him was cancelled due to the Christchurch earthquake.
Originally from Darfield, Mr Brown said he was looking forward to carrying out his duties on the West Coast.
“To start with it will be part-time, 20 hours a week, but as numbers grow that will become a fulltime role.”
